Common ilness in the Achilles tendon
The Achilles tendon is a fibrous brand of tissue that links the muscle in your calf to your heel.
This tendon is one of the most importants, because its flexibility and strenght make you run, jump and walk.
It daily resist a lot of stress, impact and pressure. About that, it can becomes inflamed, swoled and irritated. If it happens, it is called tendonitis.
There are two common injuries:
Tendonitis: It happens if you overuse or damage that area of the Achilles. It produces a pain down the back of your leg and it can get worse if it isn't treated. There are two main types of tendonitis:
- Non-insertional Achilles tendonitis: small tears in the middle of your tendon fibres. It is common in young active adults.
- Insertional Achilles tendonitis: this is a damage that occurs in the spot where your tendon meets your heel bone, it makes bone spurs. It can happen in every ages, also in active and inactive people.
You can prevent this kind of injuries with easy steps:
- Warm-up before exercising.
- Increasing activity slowly.
- Wearing the correct shoes for your activities.
- Not exercising on uneven surfaces.
- Stop activities that cause pain.
- Ice
- Rest
- Physical therapy
- Low-impact exercise alternatives, such as swimming
- Exercises to improve your calf strenght
- Heel lift shoes, orthotic shoes, cast, splint, or a walking boot.
